The DIST-ALERT layer maps per pixel vegetation disturbance, specifically vegetation cover loss, based on confidence, magnitude of loss, and whether it is ongoing. There are three confidence levels: "first detection" which is loss detected in only the most recent observation, "provisional" upon a second detection of vegetation loss, and "confirmed" once there are sufficient loss detections to reach high confidence of disturbance. These are reported for both disturbances with <50% vegetation cover loss and those with ≥50% loss, whether diffuse across an entire pixel or just a portion of it. Hover over the colors on the map and the legend in the layer list to view the classifications and associated color.

By December 25, 2024, the same area is now classified wirh confidence levels "Provisional < 50%" in khaki green and "Provisional >= 50%" in orange, showing further confirmation of land surface disturbance. The surrounding area is now also displaying first detection confidence levels, indicating more vegetation disturbance has occurred due to the spreading bushfires.
By December 25, 2024, the same area has been classified with confidence levels "Provisional < 50%" in khaki brown and "Provisional >= 50%" in orange, showing further confirmation of land surface disturbance. Despite the spreading bushfires, the surrounding area only shows first detection confidence levels starting December 25 due to obscuration of the ground by smoke and cloudy conditions between December 20 and 25.

January 2, 2025 shows confirmed disturbances in yellow and red - where there have been sufficient loss detections to reach a high confidence of disturbance. These labels persist as long as the anomalies continue to be detected. Once a location no longer has low vegetation cover, confirmed alerts are labeled as "finished" and the others are reset to no disturbance. This status is iteratively updated with each subsequent granule.
January 2, 2025 shows confirmed disturbances in yellow and red - where there have been sufficient loss detections to reach a high confidence of disturbance. These labels persist as long as the anomalies continue to be detected. Once a location no longer has vegetation cover loss greater than 10%, confirmed alerts are labeled as "finished" and the others are reset to no disturbance. This status is iteratively updated with each subsequent granule. Disturbance events last up to a year in the DIST-ALERT layer, which are turned off and displayed in the annual disturbance product (Not yet available but coming soon to Worldview!).

This example shows the construction of roads for selective logging in a logging concession of the Sangha region, Republic of Congo comparing December 6, 2023 on the left "A" side and November 23, 2024 on the right "B" side. Selective logging involves removing only the most valuable tree species, but requires the building of roads deep into the forest for extraction. Once areas are exhausted of these valuable tree species, the logging companies will move into other areas and build more roads which can be seen in these images that are 1 year apart.
