GSoC 2025: Django Phone Field proposal

Hi everyone! 👋

I’m working on a GSoC 2025 proposal with the ultimate goal of contributing a built-in PhoneNumberField to Django core.
Phone numbers are now a primary identity and communication tool in modern applications — just like email — and Django currently lacks a native solution for handling them.

The proposal aims to explore the best path to bring this feature into Django in a maintainable, standards-compliant, and developer-friendly way. As part of the research phase, I’m reviewing third-party packages like django-phonenumber-field to learn from their strengths and limitations.

I’d love to get feedback from the community — and especially the maintainers here — on how such a core contribution could be informed by the experience of this package.

I’m also looking for a potential mentor who shares interest in this topic and could help shape the proposal further.
