Does direct connection mode handle the same web page differently than the whitelist?

Description

I can access this boardgamegeek.com when using the direct connection (no proxy) mode, but when I use the always-on mode and set up a whitelist, the page fails to load properly.

Steps to Reproduce

1. Switch to direct connection mode, and I can open the webpage boardgamegeek.com.
2. Switch to always-on mode and set this webpage as a whitelist (proxy not applied), and I am unable to open the webpage boardgamegeek.com.
