Finalise provenance/auditing

There is infrastructure already in the code base for recording auditing (provenance?). However, it isn't well documented and it is not clear if it is functional

Might need @satra's input on what the scope is, and what minimum functionality needs to be ensured in a 1.0 release.

I would say that list of inputs with hashes, command with parameters and container name/tag if used as a minimum.
