For me this also does not work. The todays Daily note is created fine, but if I click a day in the future in the calendar plugin, it creates an Empty File without my Daily notes template.
Update if someone stumbles over this ticket, and having the same problem. I found the reason for me.
I had the official daily notes plugin AND periodic notes plugin enabled. After disabling the official plugin, and configure the periodic notes plugin, everything works as expected.

Describe the bug
When I click on next day in Calendar view I see that error:
I use the lates version of the Plugin and Obsidian.

I have tested different options even with one letter in the template.
