It would be good to have a release/version number. I'm currently beginning to use this API in a project and there's no official way to track what I'm releasing against.

Yes we will be adding version numbers, as in jquery-tmpl, but they will only distinguish 'tagged' builds:
Tagged Betas will have specific version numbers, 1.0.b2 etc, and all other intermediate builds prior to the v1.0 release will be 1.0pre.
